Pest Risks for Hotels and Resorts in South Florida
Every check-in can bring bed bugs. They ride in the seams and folds of luggage, bags and clothing, tend to stay within 8 feet of where people sleep and can live several months without a blood meal. With rooms turning over every day, a few bugs from one suitcase can settle into a bed, a headboard or a chair before anyone notices. In kitchens and bars, delivery boxes matter: cockroaches breed in corrugated cardboard, and German cockroaches can arrive in grocery bags.
Outdoor amenities draw pests too. Pools, gardens and bromeliads hold standing water, and half a cup of water can breed enough mosquitoes to cause a problem. In a 2018 study, Aedes aegypti was the most abundant mosquito found in Miami-Dade bromeliads. Roof rats nest in the skirts of old palm fronds, and ghost ants nest in potted plants and at the bases of palm fronds, then forage indoors. The wet season, from May 15 to October 15, and hurricane flooding add standing water and push rodents toward buildings.
Where We Focus in Your Hotel
Guest rooms
We check mattress seams, headboards, upholstered furniture and the area around the bed for bed bugs, and bathrooms and minibars for cockroaches and ants.
Housekeeping and laundry
We inspect linen carts, laundry rooms and storage closets, since bed bugs can travel in bedding.
Kitchens, restaurants and bars
We look under equipment, in drains and in dry storage, where cockroaches hide and flies breed.
Pool, grounds and exterior
We check landscaping, palms, bromeliads, pool decks and dumpsters for standing water, rodent activity and ant nests.
What Inspectors and Guests Expect
Florida law requires the DBPR Division of Hotels and Restaurants to inspect each licensed public lodging establishment at least biannually. Transient and nontransient apartments are inspected at least annually, and vacation rentals and timeshare projects are not subject to that schedule. Guests run their own inspection the moment they pull back the sheets. Points to keep in mind:
- Windows used for ventilation must have tight-fitting 16-mesh screens, unless other effective vermin control is used.
- Pesticides may only be used in compliance with Chapter 7 of the FDA Food Code.
- CDC lists the bed bug signs to look for: rusty-colored spots on the mattress or nearby furniture, shed skins and a sweet, musty odor.
Tell your housekeeping team what to look for, and call us when they find it.
Hotel & Hospitality Pest Control: Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a hotel pest control program cost?
It depends on the number of rooms and buildings, your kitchens and grounds, the pests involved and the service schedule. We start with a free inspection, then give you a program and a quote before any work begins. New customers get $25 off the first service.
Can you service the hotel without disturbing guests?
Yes. We set a convenient service schedule with your team and offer after-hours and weekend service, so your normal operation is not interrupted. You also have a Service Operations Manager assigned to your account.
A guest reported bed bugs. What should we do?
Call us; we respond within 24 hours, guaranteed. Bed bugs are not a cleanliness problem: CDC notes they turn up even in five-star hotels and travel in luggage and clothing. We inspect the room, confirm what the guest found and treat the infested areas.
Will your program help with state inspections?
Florida's DBPR Division of Hotels and Restaurants inspects public lodging establishments, and its rules require effective control of rodents, flies, roaches and other vermin. Our program includes quality assurance audits and documentation of sanitation and structural recommendations, so you have a record of what we found and recommended.
Do you service resorts and hotel groups with several properties?
Yes. We serve hotels, resorts and lodging throughout Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and the Keys. Each property gets its own program, and we can add services such as mosquito treatments for pool and garden areas or bird control for roofs and ledges.
