Why Lauderhill Has Its Own Pest Challenges

Lauderhill sits in north-central Broward County, a few miles west of Fort Lauderdale. Before it was a city it was cattle country: the city’s own history notes that the land was largely dairy farmland, including the MacArthur Dairy, with more cows than people. Developer Herbert Sadkin, whom the city calls its founding father, planned the new community in the late 1950s. He wanted to call it Sunnydale until his friend, the journalist William Safire, joked that there were no dales in Lauderdale, and “Lauderhill” was born. The city was incorporated on June 20, 1959.

The early houses were modest: the New York Times described them as 730- to 1,200-square-foot homes on 75-by-100-foot lots. In 1966 the Lauderhill Mall opened, which the city describes as the first enclosed, air-conditioned mall in the southeastern United States. Then, around 1970, came Inverrary, a planned development built around the Inverrary Country Club, whose East course hosted a PGA Tour event from 1972 through 1983, launched as the Jackie Gleason Inverrary Classic and carrying his name through 1980. Gleason built his last home on that course. The single-family neighborhoods of northwest Lauderhill followed in the late 1970s, so far west at the time that residents joked they lived in the Everglades.

That layering explains the pest picture. Lauderhill packs about 74,500 residents (2020 census) into roughly 8.6 square miles, and it mixes 1960s houses, 1970s and 1980s condominium complexes and newer apartment buildings. Older wood invites termites. Shared walls and plumbing in condo buildings let cockroaches and bed bugs travel between units. Golf-course turf, retention lakes and irrigated common areas keep the ground moist for ants and subterranean termites. And the city’s tropical climate, with a long, wet summer, means insects rarely slow down.

Common Pests in Lauderhill and Why They Show Up

German Cockroaches

The small, light-brown German cockroach lives entirely indoors, breeds fast and hides behind refrigerators, under sinks and inside cabinet hinges. In Lauderhill's large condo and apartment complexes it spreads through wall voids and shared pipes, which is why one unit's problem often becomes a building's problem. See our cockroach guide.

Signs to watch for: pepper-like droppings in drawers and roaches that scatter when you turn on the kitchen light.

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs do not care how clean a home is. They ride in on used furniture, luggage and visitors, and in multifamily buildings they can cross into neighboring units along wiring and baseboards. The earlier they are found, the fewer rooms and units need treatment.

Signs to watch for: small rust-colored spots on sheets and itchy bites in a line.

Subterranean Termites

The invasive Formosan and Asian subterranean termites are expanding through South Florida, and a 2026 University of Florida study concluded that a 2016 prediction still holds: by around 2040, roughly half of urban South Florida structures may be at risk from one or both. Irrigated golf-course land and landscaped common areas give colonies the moist soil they want.

Signs to watch for: pencil-thin mud tubes on slabs, walls and planters.

Drywood Termites

Drywood termites skip the soil and live inside the wood itself: roof framing, door jambs, window trim and furniture. Houses from Lauderhill's first decades have been through more than sixty swarm seasons, so colonies in attics and older furniture are common finds.

Signs to watch for: tiny piles of hard, sand-like pellets below wood surfaces.

Mosquitoes

The Aedes aegypti mosquito breeds in containers rather than ponds: plant saucers, bromeliads, buckets, balcony clutter and clogged gutters. It bites in daylight, so it is the one that follows you to the pool deck. Our mosquito control targets breeding spots and the shady places adults rest.

Roof Rats

Roof rats climb. They travel along palm fronds, tree limbs, fences and utility lines, then squeeze into attics and drop ceilings through small gaps. Around apartment complexes, shopping centers and restaurants, dumpster areas give them a steady food supply. Our rodent control combines exclusion, trapping and monitoring.

Signs to watch for: scratching overhead at night and droppings in the attic or garage.

Lauderhill residents also call us about ghost ants and white-footed ants trailing into kitchens (see our ant guide), fire ant mounds in lawns and along sidewalks, whiteflies on ficus hedges, chinch bug damage on St. Augustine lawns (handled with our lawn spray service), silverfish in closets, and wildlife such as iguanas around lakes and canals.

Residential Pest Control in Lauderhill

A condo in Inverrary and a house in Broward Estates have very different weak spots. In condominium buildings, the issues are usually inside: pests moving between units, trash chutes and rooms, and plumbing chases. In single-family homes, the pressure comes from outside: mulch beds against the foundation, fruit trees and palms touching the roof, and attic vents that need screening.

Our residential pest control starts with a free inspection. A technician checks the interior, the exterior and, for houses, the attic and yard, then explains what is attracting pests and how they are getting in. You get a written plan, whether you need a one-time treatment or year-round service. With ongoing service, our 110% Satisfaction Guarantee applies: if the bugs come back, so will Toro, at no additional cost to you.

If you rent, tell your landlord or manager early; most building-wide problems are cheaper to fix in the first weeks. If you own an older Lauderhill home, a termite inspection every year is inexpensive insurance against damage that stays hidden inside walls.

Commercial Pest Control for Lauderhill Businesses

Lauderhill’s business life is spread along State Road 7, Sunrise Boulevard, Oakland Park Boulevard and University Drive: shopping plazas, restaurants, markets, medical and professional offices, schools and a large stock of rental housing. Central Broward Park, the county park on State Road 7 and Sunrise Boulevard, adds big event crowds. Its cricket stadium opened in 2007, hosted the first international between two full ICC members on U.S. soil in 2010, and was a venue for the 2024 T20 World Cup, when rain and a wet outfield washed out several matches. Heavy summer rain affects pest activity the same way, pushing ants and cockroaches into buildings.

Lauderhill Pest Control FAQ

Which parts of Lauderhill do you cover?

All of it. We service Inverrary and its condominium associations, Broward Estates, Boulevard Woods, the single-family streets of northwest Lauderhill and the neighborhoods around State Road 7 and Sunrise Boulevard, in ZIP codes 33311, 33313, 33319 and 33351. Every request gets a response within 24 hours, guaranteed.

My condo keeps getting roaches even though I keep it clean. Why?

In a building with shared walls, plumbing chases and trash rooms, German cockroaches can move in from a neighboring unit no matter how clean yours is. Treating one apartment alone often just pushes them next door and back again. We treat your unit and, when the problem is wider, work with the association or manager so the units around you are inspected too.

Do I need tenting for termites in Lauderhill?

It depends on the species. Tenting (fumigation) is the standard answer for drywood termites spread through a structure, but it does nothing to subterranean termites, because their colony lives in the soil and returns after the tent comes off. Those are handled with soil treatments or bait systems. In condominium buildings, any fumigation is usually coordinated through the association. A free inspection tells you which situation you are in.

Can you help an association manage pests across a whole complex?

Yes. Many of our Lauderhill clients are condominium and homeowner associations. We can set up scheduled service for common areas, trash rooms, landscaping and exteriors, respond to individual unit complaints, and give the board written reports after each visit.

Why are mosquitoes so bad in Lauderhill in the summer?

Summer rains refill the small water holders around buildings and yards: plant saucers, bromeliads, buckets, clogged gutters and anything left on a balcony. The Aedes aegypti mosquito lays its eggs in water as small as a bottle cap and bites during the day. Dumping standing water once a week, plus targeted yard treatment, cuts the problem down a lot.

Is the inspection free, and can I speak with someone in Spanish?

Yes. Your first inspection costs nothing, new customers save $25 on their first service, and our team speaks Spanish. Call 305-594-4767 or fill out the Free Inspection form on this page.
