In Lighthouse Point, the backyard often ends at a seawall and a boat. The city is built along 18 miles of waterways, and most of its homes are single-family houses, many of them on the water. That waterfront lifestyle brings its own pests, from iguanas on the seawall to termites that can arrive on a boat. Toro Pest Management has protected South Florida since 1969, and we plan every Lighthouse Point service around your home, your dock and your vessel.

Why Lighthouse Point Has Its Own Pest Challenges
Lighthouse Point is a small city in northeastern Broward County, settled around 1947 to 1951 as the Hillsboro Isles settlement and incorporated as a town on June 13, 1956. A year later it became a city. It takes its name from the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse, which stands across the Intracoastal in neighboring Hillsboro Beach. The Intracoastal Waterway forms the city’s eastern edge, and Federal Highway, with its shopping centers and restaurants, forms the western edge.
Above all, this is a boating town. Most of the city was built on canals dug in the 1950s and 1960s, which created a large number of waterfront homes. The city counts 18 miles of waterways, and about 80% of its residences are single-family homes, many of them fronting the water. The nearby Hillsboro Inlet gives boats direct access to the ocean, and Bimini in the Bahamas is within about 40 miles. Boats here are not occasional toys; for many households they are part of daily life.
Lighthouse Point is also compact and fully built out. More than 95% of the city is developed, it covers only about 2.4 square miles, and the 2020 census counted 10,486 residents. Its streets wind through cul-de-sacs, and about 20 acres of parks and mini-parks, including Dan Witt Park and the Tennis Center, add more green space. Many homes date to the city’s original growth period, and the landscaping has had decades to mature. Seawalls, docks, older wood framing, dense tropical plantings and constant humidity create a pest picture centered on the waterline.
Common Pests in Lighthouse Point and Why They Show Up
Termites That Travel by Boat
University of Florida researchers have found that recreational boats are a major way invasive termites spread, and boats in South Florida are often found with established colonies. The Formosan, Asian subterranean and West Indian drywood termites can hide aboard for years, and their winged swarmers can fly to the dock and the house.
Signs to watch for: discarded wings or pellets on deck, in cabins and along the seawall.
Subterranean Termites at Home
Soil along canals and irrigated yards stays moist, which suits subterranean colonies of millions. Asian subterranean termites swarm in March near sunset, Formosan termites from late April. Tenting is not the fix here: it treats drywood termites, while subterranean colonies are handled with soil treatments or baits. See our termite control options.
Drywood Termites
Homes from the 1950s and 1960s have had many swarm seasons to collect drywood termites in attic framing, window frames, cabinets and furniture. Swarmers fly in from March through June, and a home can host several colonies before anyone notices.
Signs to watch for: small heaps of sand-like pellets below wood surfaces.
Iguanas
Seawalls and canal banks are ideal iguana territory. Their burrows next to seawalls can lead to erosion and collapse, they eat ornamental plants, flowers and fruit, and their droppings pile up on docks, boat lifts and pool decks. Our wildlife service removes them and closes off the spots they use.
Roof Rats
Mature palms, fruit trees and tangled landscaping along the water give roof rats food and shelter. They travel along branches and lines to reach attics, garages and stored boat gear. Our rodent control traps them and seals the roofline.
Signs to watch for: droppings in the garage and chewed fruit in the yard.
No-see-ums and Mosquitoes
Biting midges breed along the coast and bite at dusk and early morning, just when people head out to the dock. Rainy-season mosquitoes, including the Aedes aegypti, breed in buckets, boat covers and plant saucers. Our mosquito control treats resting and breeding areas.
Lighthouse Point homeowners also call us about German and American cockroaches, ghost and white-footed ants, spiders around dock lights, wasps under eaves and boat canopies, and whiteflies on ficus hedges.
Residential Pest Control in Lighthouse Point
A canal-front home in Lighthouse Point is really three areas to protect: the house, the yard and the waterline. The house may have original framing and decades of renovations, the yard usually has mature trees and thick hedges, and the waterline includes the seawall, the dock and often a boat. Pests move freely between all three.
Our residential pest control starts with a free inspection that covers the inside of the home, the attic and garage, the landscaping and the seawall and dock. If you keep a boat at home, tell us; we can include signs of termite activity around the dock in our report so you know whether a closer look at the vessel is worth it.
A few habits help on the water, too. Keep dock and boat lights off on spring evenings when termites swarm, check cabins, lockers and wood trim for pellets or mud, and store cushions, coolers and gear off the garage floor where roaches and rodents like to nest. UF researchers point out that recreational boats are rarely checked for termites, so a little attention goes a long way.
We then recommend a plan that fits your property. With ongoing service, protection stays in place all year, and our 110% Satisfaction Guarantee means that if the bugs come back, so will Toro, at no additional cost to you.
Buying a waterfront home? A termite inspection before closing is especially important in a city with older homes and a lot of boat traffic.

Do you provide pest control throughout Lighthouse Point?
Yes. We serve all of Lighthouse Point, from Venetian Isles, Hillsboro Isles and Lake Placid Isles to Coral Key Harbor and the businesses along Federal Highway, in ZIP codes 33064 and 33074. We respond within 24 hours, guaranteed.
Can termites really come from a boat?
They can. A 2025 University of Florida study found that recreational boats are a major pathway for the Formosan subterranean termite, the Asian subterranean termite and the West Indian drywood termite. Colonies can hide aboard for years, and winged termites from an infested boat can start colonies on land nearby. UF researchers recommend that boat owners inspect their vessels regularly.
How do I keep iguanas off my seawall and dock?
Iguanas dig burrows near seawalls that can lead to erosion and collapse, and they leave droppings on docks and pool decks. Our wildlife service removes iguanas and helps you make the property less attractive by closing burrows and access points and adjusting the plants they feed on.
Why do I get bitten at dusk when I am on the dock?
That is usually no-see-ums, the tiny biting midges that breed in wet coastal areas and bite mostly at dusk, night and early morning. They can slip through regular screens. Mosquitoes add to the problem in the rainy season, especially the daytime-biting Aedes aegypti that breeds in containers around the yard.
Do you service restaurants and shops on Federal Highway?
Yes. We provide commercial pest control for restaurants, retail stores, offices and property managers in Lighthouse Point, with detailed service reports and visits scheduled around your business hours.
