Why North Miami Has Its Own Pest Challenges
North Miami sits in northeastern Miami-Dade County, about 10 miles north of downtown Miami, with Biscayne Bay on its eastern edge. The area was once known as Arch Creek, after a natural limestone bridge over a creek that Native Americans used as part of an important trail. The town was incorporated in 1926 (it was briefly called the Town of Miami Shores before taking the North Miami name in 1931) and was later rechartered as a city. North Miami marked its 100th anniversary in February 2026, and the 2020 census counted 60,191 residents.
Few cities in the county put so much green space and water next to so many homes. Oleta River State Park, at 1,043 acres the largest urban park in Florida’s state park system, borders the FIU Biscayne Bay Campus. Arch Creek Park preserves the creek, an archaeological site and a nature center. Waterfront neighborhoods such as Keystone Point are laced with canals that open onto the bay. Mangroves, tidal water, canals and mature shade trees keep humidity high and give mosquitoes, rodents and termites plenty of habitat right next to residential streets.
The housing mix adds another layer. North Miami was long a city of single-family homes, and many of those older houses remain, but it now also has apartment buildings, new towers and large redevelopment projects such as SoLé Mia. Older wood frames, crawl spaces and dense landscaping on one block, shared walls and trash rooms on the next: each property needs its own approach.
Common Pests in North Miami and Why They Show Up
Subterranean Termites
The invasive Formosan and Asian subterranean termites build huge colonies in moist soil, and North Miami's canals, bayfront lots and irrigated yards give them that moisture. According to a 2026 University of Florida study, a 2016 projection that roughly half of the structures in urban South Florida could be at risk from these termites by about 2040 is still on track.
Signs to watch for: pencil-width mud tubes on foundations and walls, and swarms around lights on spring evenings.
Mosquitoes
Mangrove shorelines along the bay and the Oleta River, plus canals throughout the city, give mosquitoes room to breed. At home, the day-biting Aedes aegypti and the Asian tiger mosquito lay eggs in containers that hold even a little rainwater. Our mosquito control targets breeding sites and the shady spots where adults rest.
Roof Rats
North Miami's mature trees, fruit trees and overgrown hedges let roof rats travel from yard to roof without touching the ground. Once inside an attic, they chew wiring and insulation. Our rodent control seals entry points, removes the rats and keeps monitoring.
Signs to watch for: noises in the ceiling after dark, droppings and gnawed fruit in the yard.
Fire Ants
Fire ants favor sunny, open ground: lawns, parks, ball fields, sidewalk edges and the turf around schools. Their mounds often pop up after rain, and their stings are painful. Treating only the visible mound tends to push the colony elsewhere. Learn more in our ant guide.
American Cockroaches
Often called palmetto bugs, American cockroaches live in sewers, storm drains, mulch and tree holes, and they wander into homes and businesses at night, especially after heavy rain floods their hiding places. Older plumbing and gaps under doors make it easy. See our cockroach guide.
Wasps
Paper wasps and other stinging insects build nests under eaves, carports, shutters and play structures in North Miami's leafy neighborhoods. Nests near doors and walkways are the ones that cause trouble. Our wasp guide explains which ones to leave to a professional.
North Miami homeowners also call us about drywood termites in older homes, German cockroaches in apartments, whiteflies on ficus hedges, lawn insects damaging St. Augustine grass (handled with our lawn spray service), fleas brought in by pets and wildlife such as raccoons, opossums and iguanas.
Residential Pest Control in North Miami
A bayfront home in Keystone Point faces different pests than a bungalow near Westside Sunkist Grove or a unit in a downtown apartment building. Waterfront homes deal with mosquitoes, roof rats along docks and seawalls, and subterranean termites in damp soil. Older inland homes often have drywood termites in original wood, roof rats in the attic and fire ants in the lawn. Apartment residents mostly need help with German cockroaches and ants that move between units.
Our residential pest control begins with a free inspection inside and out. We trace how pests are getting in, find what is attracting them, and check for termite activity, then recommend a plan that fits the property and your budget. Ongoing service keeps protection in place all year. If the bugs come back between visits, so will Toro, at no additional cost to you, under our 110% Satisfaction Guarantee.
If you are buying or renovating an older North Miami home, a termite inspection is a small investment that can uncover hidden damage before it becomes a major repair.
Commercial Pest Control for North Miami Businesses
North Miami is home to a university campus, a contemporary art museum, a downtown that hosts community festivals, schools, medical offices, restaurants and a large stock of rental housing. The FIU Biscayne Bay Campus alone is headquarters to four schools, including the Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. Places with that much foot traffic need pest control that is consistent, documented and discreet.
We provide commercial pest control for:
- Schools and educational facilities, with service scheduled around class time.
- Restaurants and food service, where cockroaches, flies and rodents are a health code risk.
- Retail stores and shopping centers.
- Health care facilities and medical offices.
- Property management companies, apartment complexes and condo associations.
- Government and public buildings.
Each commercial visit is documented in a written report that supports inspections and audits. Our technicians are trained at the TORO Institute at our Miami headquarters, where on-staff entomologists teach food safety, sanitation, structural practices and pest management techniques.

I live near the bay or Oleta River State Park. Why are mosquitoes so bad?
Mangrove shorelines, tidal wetlands and the city's canals produce mosquitoes, especially from mid-May to mid-October when the rainy season peaks. Close to home, the Aedes aegypti mosquito breeds in small containers like flower pots, buckets and clogged gutters. Draining standing water weekly and treating shaded resting spots in the yard cut the numbers noticeably.
How do I know if the winged insects in my house are termites or flying ants?
Termite swarmers have straight antennae, a thick waist and two pairs of wings of equal length that break off easily. Flying ants have elbowed antennae, a pinched waist and front wings longer than the back ones. If you find a pile of shed wings near a window or light, save a few in a sealed bag and we will identify them at your free inspection.
What can I do about fire ant mounds in my lawn?
Fire ants build mounds in sunny lawns, along sidewalks and around utility boxes, and they sting when disturbed. Raking or flooding a mound usually just moves the colony. A combination of baits and targeted mound treatments, repeated as needed, gives longer-lasting control.
