Why Greenacres Has Its Own Pest Challenges

Greenacres was founded by Lawrence Carter Swain, who bought land and platted the original section in 1923 as a community for working families. It was incorporated as Greenacres City in 1926, and the name was shortened to Greenacres in 1990. Today it covers about six square miles in the central part of Palm Beach County, east of Wellington and next to Palm Springs, and it had about 44,000 residents in the 2020 census, making it the eighth largest of the county’s 39 municipalities.

Greenacres is a family suburb first. The city has around 17,000 homes, from single-family houses to condos, villas, townhomes and apartments, plus five elementary schools, three middle schools and John I. Leonard High School, which is described as the largest high school in Palm Beach County. Its parks cover more than 90 acres, and the city sits right next to Okeeheelee Park, a county park of more than 1,700 acres. The city has also been a Tree City USA since 1992. Shade trees, lawns, playgrounds and pets are great for families, and they are also where fire ants, fleas, ants and mosquitoes settle in.

Water is the hidden factor. Greenacres lies inside the territory of the Lake Worth Drainage District, which covers about 200 square miles of southeastern Palm Beach County and runs roughly 500 miles of canals that drain neighborhoods and control flooding. Plenty of Greenacres yards back onto canals or onto retention lakes, and the city itself has spent years improving drainage, adding pipes and rebuilding swales in the flood-prone area between 10th Avenue North and Lake Worth Road. Damp soil, standing water after storms and a rainy season from May through October suit subterranean termites, ants and mosquitoes perfectly.

The city is also diverse, with about 45% of residents identifying as Hispanic or Latino in 2020, which makes Spanish-speaking service especially useful here.

Common Pests in Greenacres and Why They Show Up

Fire Ants

Fire ants build mounds in sunny lawns, park fields, school grounds and the edges of driveways, and the colonies grow after summer rain. Their stings are painful, which is a real issue for children and pets playing outside. Baits work well because the workers carry them back to feed the queen. See our ant guide.

Subterranean Termites

The Formosan and Asian subterranean termites look for moist soil, and homes near canals, lakes and swales provide it. A 2026 University of Florida study found that a 2016 forecast is holding: about half of urban South Florida structures could be at risk from one or both of these species by roughly 2040.

Signs to watch for: mud tubes on the slab, block walls and garage door frames.

Mosquitoes

The Aedes aegypti mosquito breeds in toys, buckets, plant saucers and clogged gutters, bites during the day and stays close to where it hatched. Canals and lakes add more mosquitoes after heavy rain. Our mosquito control targets breeding spots and the shady areas where adults rest.

German Cockroaches

In apartment and townhome communities, German cockroaches spread between units through shared walls, plumbing and electrical lines. They breed fast in kitchens and bathrooms, so one untreated unit can keep reinfesting its neighbors. Our cockroach guide explains why coordinated treatment matters.

Fleas

Dogs and cats bring fleas in from shaded, humid parts of the yard, and the eggs and larvae end up in carpets, couches and pet beds. Treating only the pet, or only the house, rarely ends the problem.

Signs to watch for: pets scratching constantly and small bites around your ankles.

Rodents

Roof rats climb fruit trees, palms and fences to reach attics, while house mice slip in through garage doors and utility gaps. Bird feeders, pet food left outside and fallen fruit keep them coming. Our rodent control seals openings and removes the rodents.

Greenacres residents also call us about ghost ants and white-footed ants in kitchens, lawn damage on St. Augustine grass (handled with our lawn spray service), whiteflies on hedges, drywood termites in older homes and furniture, spiders in garages, and wildlife such as iguanas and opossums along the canals.

Residential Pest Control in Greenacres

Greenacres homes range from older houses in the Original Section to villas, townhomes and newer single-family subdivisions. Homes on canals and lakes face moisture-loving pests like subterranean termites and mosquitoes. Houses with big lawns and pets need attention to fire ants and fleas. Apartments and townhomes need treatment that accounts for the units next door.

Our residential pest control starts with a free inspection of the inside and outside of your home. We check the foundation, the attic, doors and windows, the lawn and any area that stays wet, identify the pests and what is attracting them, and recommend a plan you can live with. Regular service keeps protection in place through every season, and our 110% Satisfaction Guarantee means that if the bugs come back, so will Toro, at no additional cost to you.

Before buying a home in Greenacres, schedule a termite inspection. It costs little compared with repairs, and termite damage is usually out of sight.

Commercial Pest Control for Greenacres Businesses

Most of Greenacres’ businesses line Lake Worth Road, Forest Hill Boulevard, 10th Avenue North and Jog Road: shopping plazas, grocery stores, restaurants, medical offices, daycares and service businesses that families use every week. The city’s many schools and apartment communities also need dependable, documented pest control.

Commercial accounts receive written service reports for inspections and audits, and service is timed around your hours. Our technicians are trained at the TORO Institute, the training facility at our Miami headquarters, where on-staff entomologists teach food safety, sanitation, structural practices and pest management techniques.

Greenacres Pest Control FAQ

Do you serve all of Greenacres?

Yes. We cover the entire city, from the Original Section to Ramblewood, Heather Estates, Canalakes and the neighborhoods along Lake Worth Road, Forest Hill Boulevard, 10th Avenue North and Jog Road, including ZIP codes 33413, 33415, 33463 and 33467. We guarantee a response within 24 hours.

My backyard backs onto a canal. Does that mean more mosquitoes?

It can. Canals and the swales that drain into them hold water after heavy rain, and the Lake Worth Drainage District notes that it does not treat its canals for mosquitoes. Still, most of the mosquitoes that bite you in the yard breed in small containers close to the house. Draining standing water weekly and treating shady resting areas give you the biggest improvement.

How do I get rid of fire ants without harming my lawn or my kids' play area?

Fire ant mounds pop up quickly after rain in lawns, parks and along sidewalks. Kicking a mound only sends the workers out to defend it. We use baits and targeted mound treatments applied according to their label directions, and we tell you how long to keep children and pets off treated areas.

Can you treat fleas from the yard as well as inside the house?

Yes. Fleas live on pets but also develop in shady, moist parts of the yard and in carpets and pet bedding. We treat inside and outside at the same time and work with your vet's on-animal treatment, so the cycle actually breaks.

We rent an apartment. Can you help with cockroaches if the problem comes from the neighbors?

Yes. German cockroaches spread through shared walls and plumbing, so we treat your unit and, when the landlord or manager agrees, the units around it. We also offer service plans for property managers who run apartment and townhome communities.

Is the inspection free, and does your team speak Spanish?

Yes, and yes. The first inspection is free, new customers save $25 on the first service, and our staff speaks Spanish. Call 305-594-4767 or fill out the Free Inspection form on this page.
