Why Miramar Has Its Own Pest Challenges

Miramar was incorporated on May 26, 1955, with fewer than 200 residents. Its first mayor, Robert Gordon, named it after the Miramar suburb of Havana, and the original city covered only about 2.9 square miles between Pembroke Road and the Dade County line. Today Miramar is a long, narrow city in southwestern Broward County, roughly 14 miles east to west and 2.5 miles wide, and it had about 134,700 residents in the 2020 census.

That shape explains a lot about Miramar’s pests. The eastern part, including Historic Miramar, has been largely built out since the mid-1960s, so many homes have older roofs, slabs and wood that have lived through decades of termite swarms. Moving west, the city becomes a series of newer planned communities set around lakes, with names like Sunset Lakes, Monarch Lakes and Silver Shores. Roughly 2 square miles of Miramar is water, and U.S. 27 runs through its western reaches near the Everglades. Wet soil, thick landscaping and open land on the edge of town bring subterranean termites, ants, mosquitoes and wildlife.

Then there is business. Miramar has become a corporate address: the Miramar Park of Commerce holds about five million square feet of office, laboratory, light manufacturing and distribution space, the FBI’s Miami field office moved to the city in 2014, and VSE Corporation announced in 2024 that it was moving its corporate headquarters here. Interstate 75 and Florida’s Turnpike both cross the city. Offices, warehouses and food service sit close to homes, and pests move between them.

Common Pests in Miramar and Why They Show Up

Rodents

Roof rats nest in attics and palm canopies, while warehouses and loading docks attract rats looking for stored goods, packaging and dumpster scraps. A rat can squeeze through an opening about the size of a quarter. Our rodent control combines exclusion, trapping and ongoing monitoring for homes and commercial buildings.

Signs to watch for: droppings along walls, gnawed boxes or wiring, and scratching at night.

German Cockroaches

These small roaches live entirely indoors, in kitchens, office break rooms, vending areas and restaurant equipment. They hitchhike in deliveries and multiply quickly. American cockroaches, or palmetto bugs, also come in from drains and mulch beds. Read our cockroach guide.

Subterranean Termites

The invasive Formosan and Asian subterranean termites thrive in moist soil, and Miramar's lakes and irrigated yards provide plenty. UF researchers say both species can even nest in large living trees. Soil treatments and bait systems, not tenting, are how these colonies are controlled.

Signs to watch for: mud tubes on the slab or swarms of winged termites at dusk in spring.

Drywood Termites

In the older homes of eastern Miramar, drywood termites can live for years inside attic framing, door frames and furniture without touching the soil. When colonies are spread through a structure, fumigation is often the most practical answer.

Signs to watch for: tiny pellet piles that look like sand under wood.

Mosquitoes

The lakes, canals and wetlands at the western edge of the city produce mosquitoes during the rainy season, and the Aedes aegypti mosquito breeds in small containers right beside the house. It is a daytime biter. Our mosquito control targets resting and breeding sites.

Ants

Ghost ants and white-footed ants trail into kitchens and office pantries, and fire ants build mounds in lawns, park fields and the edges of parking lots. Store-bought sprays usually split ghost ant and white-footed ant colonies into new nests. See our ant guide.

Miramar residents and property managers also call us about bed bugs in apartments, whiteflies on ficus hedges, lawn damage on St. Augustine grass (treated with our lawn spray service), birds nesting on commercial rooflines and wildlife such as iguanas and raccoons.

Residential Pest Control in Miramar

East-side homes and west-side homes have different weak spots. In Historic Miramar and the older neighborhoods near University Drive, we pay close attention to attics, roof framing, slab cracks and older plumbing, where termites, rats and roaches find their way in. In Sunset Lakes, Riviera Isles, Monarch Lakes and the other lakeside communities, the bigger risks are moisture at the foundation, ant colonies in landscaping and mosquitoes from yards and shorelines. Townhomes and apartments add another layer, because pests can travel between units.

Our residential pest control starts with a free inspection. A technician checks the inside of your home, the exterior and the yard, finds the pests and their entry points, and explains what is attracting them. You then get a plan that fits your home and budget, with regular visits to keep a barrier in place. Our 110% Satisfaction Guarantee means that if the bugs come back, so will Toro, at no additional cost to you.

For older homes, an annual termite inspection is one of the most useful habits you can keep. Catching a colony in its first years costs far less than repairing beams and flooring later.

Commercial Pest Control for Miramar Businesses

Miramar’s economy is built around offices, logistics and services. The Miramar Park of Commerce alone was home to about 180 employers in a 2019 profile, and the city also has college campuses, retail centers, restaurants and public facilities. Each of these spaces has its own pest risks: rodents and stored-product pests in warehouses, cockroaches in break rooms and kitchens, birds on rooftops and loading docks.

Miramar Pest Control FAQ

Do you service all of Miramar, east and west?

Yes. We cover the whole city, from Historic Miramar and the neighborhoods east of University Drive to Monarch Lakes, Silver Shores, Riviera Isles, Sunset Lakes and the communities near U.S. 27, in ZIP codes 33023, 33025, 33027 and 33029. Response within 24 hours is guaranteed.

Are older homes in eastern Miramar more at risk for termites?

They often are. The eastern quarter of the city has been largely built out since the mid-1960s, and decades of exposure give drywood termites time to settle into roof framing, window frames and furniture. Older slabs can also have cracks and plumbing gaps that let subterranean termites in. Newer homes in the west are not immune, especially on irrigated lakefront lots. An inspection shows which species you are dealing with, since each needs a different treatment.

Can you set up pest control for an office or warehouse in the Miramar Park of Commerce?

Yes. We build commercial programs for offices, distribution centers, light manufacturing and service businesses, with monitoring devices, rodent exclusion, scheduled visits outside working hours and written reports you can hand to auditors or corporate facilities teams.

Why do rats keep getting into my attic?

Roof rats are excellent climbers. They use palm fronds, hedges, fences and utility lines to reach the roof, then squeeze through gaps around vents, soffits and roof-to-wall joints. Trapping alone rarely solves it. We remove the rats and seal the openings so new ones cannot follow.

What can I do about mosquitoes near the lakes?

Lakes and canals are part of daily life in Miramar, but the mosquito that bothers you most at home, Aedes aegypti, usually breeds right in the yard, in plant saucers, bromeliads, toys and clogged gutters. Broward County notes it can breed in water as small as a bottle cap. Empty containers weekly and ask us about treating the shady areas where adults rest.

Is the inspection free, and do you have Spanish-speaking staff?

Yes on both counts. Your first inspection is free, new customers receive $25 off the first service, and our team speaks Spanish. Call 305-594-4767 or fill out the Free Inspection form on this page.
