Pest Risks for Schools in South Florida

A campus feeds pests all day: cafeteria lines, snacks in backpacks and desks, vending machines and the dumpsters behind the kitchen. Cockroaches breed in corrugated cardboard, so deliveries to the kitchen and storeroom need a look, and ghost ants nest in wall voids and potted plants and trail to sweets. UF/IFAS notes that roof rats travel along branches, vines and utility wires, so trees that touch a roofline give them a way in, and mice settle in quiet storage rooms.

Part of South Florida’s wet season, from about mid-May to mid-October, overlaps the school year. Fire ants make their mating flights on warm, sunny days after rain, from spring to fall, and UF/IFAS notes that fire ants often nest in parks and playing fields. Standing water in gutters, planters and debris lets mosquitoes breed, and in summer they can go from egg to adult in about a week. After a hurricane, UF/IFAS warns that flooding displaces rodents and that floods cause fire ants to form floating rafts.

Where We Focus on a School Campus

Cafeteria and Kitchen

Roaches and rodents follow food, grease and moisture. We check behind equipment, under sinks, in dry storage and at the receiving door.

Classrooms and Lockers

Food left in desks, cubbies and lockers draws ants and roaches. We check the monitors and tell you which rooms need a cleanup.

Gyms, Locker Rooms and Restrooms

Damp floors and drains invite roaches and drain flies. We find the source and can add Bio-Foam drain cleaning where drains are the problem.

Fields, Playgrounds and Grounds

We look for fire ant mounds, wasp nests under eaves and bleachers and standing water, and treat the exterior perimeter of each building.

What Parents Expect

Parents and staff want to know how pests are handled where children spend their day. EPA’s guide Preventing Pests for Healthier Schools makes the case for Integrated Pest Management in a few points:

  • The link between pests, mainly cockroaches and rodents, and asthma is widely documented, and mouse allergens are common in school settings.
  • IPM applies pesticides only when needed and only in the specific problem area.
  • Everyone at school, from the kitchen staff to the teachers, has a role in finding and reducing the conditions that harbor pests.

That last point is where our recommendations help: we point out the conditions your custodial team and teachers can fix.

School & Educational Facility Pest Control: Frequently Asked Questions

How much does pest control for a school cost?

It depends on the size of the campus, the number of buildings, the pests involved and how often you need service. The inspection is free, so you get an IPM plan and a quote before any work begins, plus $25 off the first service.

Will you treat while students are in class?

We can schedule service after hours and on weekends, and we coordinate every visit with your principal and custodial staff. Products are applied according to the label. Tell us about students or staff with allergies or asthma, and about your district's pest management and notification policies, and we plan the service around them.

Which pests do you handle in schools?

Roaches, ants, rodents, flies, spiders and wasps, plus fire ants on playing fields and termites in buildings. UF/IFAS notes that children can carry cockroaches from school to home in book bags and lunch containers, and EPA notes that cockroach droppings and body parts can trigger asthma.

What do we get after each visit?

Your technician checks the insect monitors and bait stations, inspects for signs of activity, treats the exterior perimeter when needed and tells you which conditions attract pests and how to correct them, from sanitation to structural gaps. If new activity appears between regular visits, we come back free of charge.

Do you service districts and colleges with several campuses?

Yes. We build a program for each campus, from elementary schools to universities, across Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and the Keys, and coordinate with your campus services team at every site. Toro responds within 24 hours, guaranteed, and Hablamos Español.
