Plantation was laid out around big lots, gardens and fruit trees, with its first homes built in 1947, and more than seven decades later its mature shade trees are one of the things residents love most about it. Those same trees are highways and homes for roof rats, termites and whiteflies. Toro Pest Management has served South Florida since 1969, and we help Plantation homes and businesses keep the canopy without the pests.

Why Plantation Has Its Own Pest Challenges
Before drainage began in 1906, the land under Plantation was Everglades wetland. The North New River Canal opened in 1912, and the city’s name comes from the Everglades Plantation Company, which tried and failed to grow rice here. In 1931 Frederick Peters bought about 10,000 acres along what is now State Road 7 and hired architect Russell Pancoast to draw a master plan. Buyers were encouraged to purchase “long acres,” one-acre lots with roughly two-thirds of the land set aside for gardens and fruit trees. The first homes went up in 1947, and Plantation was incorporated in April 1953 with fewer than 500 residents.
That plan is still visible. Plantation has been named a Tree City USA 40 times (as of its 2023 recognition), and its older streets are lined with large shade trees, palms and fruit trees planted by generations of homeowners. Plantation Acres keeps a rural, large-lot character, and, after decades of annexations, the North New River Canal now forms the city’s southern boundary. A shaded yard full of mature trees is beautiful, but it also gives roof rats a route to the roof, holds moisture for termites and mosquitoes, and supports whiteflies and other plant pests.
The city has grown to about 91,750 residents (2020 census) across roughly 22 square miles in central Broward County, and much of its housing stock dates back several decades. Plantation is also a business center. It is home to DHL Express’s U.S. head office, the Broward Mall, Plantation General Hospital and redevelopment projects such as Plantation Walk on the former Fashion Mall site and Plantation Midtown on the former American Express campus. Older homes, big trees and busy commercial districts side by side make for a very specific set of pest problems.
Common Pests in Plantation and Why They Show Up
Roof Rats
Plantation's canopy is a roof rat's dream. Roof rats eat fruit, nest in palm heads and dense vines, and use overhanging branches to reach attics. Once inside, they chew wiring and soil insulation. Our rodent control pairs removal with sealing and tree-trimming advice.
Signs to watch for: half-eaten fruit under trees and scurrying in the ceiling at night.
Subterranean Termites
The invasive Formosan and Asian subterranean termites can nest inside large living trees as well as in the soil, so a mature yard needs a careful look. Because the colony lives outside the house, tenting does not stop them; soil treatments and baits do.
Signs to watch for: mud tubes on walls, slabs and tree trunks.
Drywood Termites
Homes from Plantation's early decades have had many swarm seasons to collect colonies of drywood termites in roof framing, eaves, window frames and wooden furniture. When several colonies are spread through a house, fumigation is often the most practical solution.
Signs to watch for: little piles of pellets and discarded wings near windows.
Whiteflies
Ficus hedges and many ornamentals in mature landscapes are favorite food for whiteflies. Infested hedges drop their leaves and drip honeydew that turns into black sooty mold on cars, pavers and patio furniture.
Mosquitoes
Shade, bromeliads, tree holes, canals and backyard containers keep mosquitoes comfortable all summer. The Asian tiger mosquito and Aedes aegypti breed in small pockets of water and bite during the day. Our mosquito control treats the shady spots where they rest.
Wildlife
Raccoons, opossums and squirrels move through Plantation's tree-lined yards, and iguanas bask along canal banks and eat landscaping. Squirrels and raccoons can tear into soffits and attics. Our wildlife service removes them and closes up the entry points.
Plantation residents also call us about ghost ants and white-footed ants in kitchens (see our ant guide), palmetto bugs from leaf litter and drains (our cockroach guide explains why), spiders in eaves and pool cages, silverfish in older closets and attics, and lawn pests on St. Augustine grass treated with our lawn spray service.
Residential Pest Control in Plantation
Many Plantation homes have a story like this: a 1950s or 1960s house with additions, an old fruit tree out back, a ficus hedge along the property line and a canopy that touches the roof. Each of those details matters. Additions create seams where termites and rodents get in, old trees can hide termite colonies and rat nests, and dense hedges shelter whiteflies and ants. Homes on the large lots of Plantation Acres can face many of the same issues as a small farm, while townhomes and other attached homes, such as those in parts of Jacaranda, need service that accounts for neighboring units.
Our residential pest control begins with a free inspection of the house, the roofline, the trees and the yard. We identify the pests, show you where they are coming from and recommend a plan that protects your home without forcing you to cut down the trees you love. Regular visits keep a barrier in place, and our 110% Satisfaction Guarantee means that if the bugs come back, so will Toro, at no additional cost to you.
If you are buying one of Plantation’s older homes, a termite inspection before closing is one of the smartest steps you can take. Damage often hides in walls, attics and additions.
Commercial Pest Control for Plantation Businesses
Plantation has long been one of central Broward’s office and shopping hubs. Corporate offices, medical buildings, the Broward Mall and other shopping centers, restaurants, Plantation General Hospital, schools and apartment communities all share the city’s warm, humid climate and its rodent and cockroach pressure.
We provide commercial pest control for:
- Retail stores and shopping centers, including mall tenants and mixed-use developments.
- Health care facilities, medical offices and clinics.
- Restaurants and food service, from quick-service spots to full kitchens.
- Property management for office buildings, apartment communities and HOAs.
- Schools and educational facilities.
Each commercial program includes documented service reports and scheduling that works around your hours. Our technicians train at the TORO Institute at our Miami headquarters, where on-staff entomologists teach food safety, sanitation, structural practices and current pest management techniques.

Do you provide pest control in every Plantation neighborhood?
Yes. We serve the whole city, from the Historic District and Park East to Plantation Isles, Jacaranda, Lauderdale West and the large lots of Plantation Acres, in ZIP codes 33313, 33317, 33322, 33323, 33324 and 33325. We guarantee a response within 24 hours.
Can termites live in the trees in my yard?
Yes. University of Florida researchers note that the invasive Formosan and Asian subterranean termites can build nests in large living trees, and their colonies can reach millions of termites. A colony in a tree near the house can forage into the structure. During an inspection we check trees, stumps and roots close to the home as well as the house itself.
How do roof rats get into my attic?
In Plantation, usually from above. Roof rats run along tree branches, palm fronds and utility lines that touch or overhang the roof, then slip in through gaps at vents, soffits and roof joints. Trimming branches back from the roofline and sealing those gaps are as important as trapping.
What is the sticky black film on my car and patio under the hedge?
That is often sooty mold growing on honeydew left by whiteflies or other sap-feeding insects. Whiteflies are a frequent problem on ficus hedges and other ornamentals in South Florida, and they can strip a hedge of its leaves. Our whitefly treatments protect the plants and stop the mess.
