Why Islamorada Has Its Own Pest Challenges

Islamorada’s official name, Islamorada, Village of Islands, says a lot. The village was incorporated at the end of 1997 and covers Plantation Key, Windley Key, Upper Matecumbe Key, Lower Matecumbe Key and Tea Table Key, roughly between mile markers 72 and 91 on the Overseas Highway. About 7,100 people lived there in the 2020 census, spread along a narrow chain of islands with the Atlantic on one side and Florida Bay on the other.

History here is closely tied to the weather and the water. Settlers from the Bahamas arrived in the mid-to-late 1800s and grew and canned pineapples; the Plantation Key Colony neighborhood is named for a pineapple plantation that once stood there. Henry Flagler’s railroad reached Key West in 1912 with a station in Islamorada, and the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 struck the area almost directly. A memorial at mile marker 82 holds the ashes of more than 300 of its victims. Today the village is known as the “Sportfishing Capital of the World,” and marinas such as Robbie’s, charter docks, fishing lodges and waterfront restaurants are part of daily life.

That layout creates a specific set of pest conditions. Homes sit on canals and bay lots with docks and boats, so salt air, wood and moisture are everywhere. Many houses are second homes or rentals that change hands every week. And although Islamorada gets less rain than Miami, about 39 inches a year with September usually the wettest month, the wet season still fills every bucket and boat cover with water.

Common Pests in Islamorada and Why They Show Up

West Indian Drywood Termites

This drywood termite is one of the two most damaging termites in the Keys, according to UF/IFAS Monroe County Extension. It lives only in wood that stays out of the rain: rafters, trim, cabinets, furniture and the woodwork of boats. Swarms run from April to June. Our drywood termite page explains how colonies are found and treated.

Signs to watch for: small heaps of pellets that look like coarse sand or ground pepper.

Asian Subterranean Termites

The Asian subterranean termite is the other one. It flies from February to April, from dusk into the night, and heads for lights on porches and docks. UF/IFAS has seen it damage mature native trees in the Keys, and it can travel on boats, so a waterfront lot is not protected just because the soil is thin.

Signs to watch for: mud tubes on slabs, pilings and tree trunks.

Roof Rats

Palms, fruit trees and dense tropical landscaping give roof rats shelter and food, and fronds touching the roof give them a way in. Fish-cleaning stations, bait and trash bins at docks and restaurants add more food. Our rodent control finds and seals entry points, then removes the rats.

Signs to watch for: gnaw marks, droppings and noises in the attic at night.

Mosquitoes

Mangroves and tidal flats produce mosquitoes in warm months, and the Aedes aegypti mosquito breeds in containers as small as a bottle cap around homes and marinas. It bites during the day. We combine yard treatments with advice on removing breeding spots through our mosquito control service.

Green Iguanas

UF/IFAS reports green iguanas established in the Keys. On canal properties they feed on flowers and ornamental plants, leave droppings on docks and pool decks, and burrow at the base of seawalls, where their tunnels can contribute to erosion. Our wildlife team can help.

Bed Bugs

Lodges, inns and vacation rentals host travelers from all over the world, and bed bugs ride in on luggage. Spotting them in one room early keeps the problem from spreading to the next and keeps rooms in service.

Islamorada customers also ask us about American and German cockroaches in kitchens and storage rooms, ants after heavy rain, spiders and wasps around docks and screened porches, and whiteflies on hedges.

Residential Pest Control in Islamorada

Houses in Islamorada range from older cottages and raised homes to new waterfront builds and condo units. Raised homes need attention underneath, where wood framing, plumbing and storage come together. Canal homes add docks, boathouses and seawalls to the list. Second homes and rentals need a schedule that works even when no one is living there.

Our residential pest control begins with a free inspection of the home, the yard and the waterfront. We check wood and furniture for drywood termites, foundations and trees for mud tubes, the roofline for rat entry points, and the yard for standing water. Then we recommend a plan that fits a full-time home, a seasonal home or a rental. On Plantation Key, in neighborhoods such as Plantation Key Colony and Venetian Shores, houses sit close to their neighbors, so a rat problem or a termite swarm next door can soon become yours. That is why we also look at shared hedges, fences and trees along the property line. Our 110% Satisfaction Guarantee covers it: if the bugs come back, so will Toro, at no additional cost to you.

If you are purchasing a home, schedule a termite inspection before closing, and include any furniture or boat that conveys with the property.

Islamorada Pest Control FAQ

Do you cover all of Islamorada, Village of Islands?

Yes. The village runs from Plantation Key through Windley Key and Upper and Lower Matecumbe Key, plus Tea Table Key, and it uses ZIP codes 33036 and 33070. We serve homes and businesses on every one of those keys and guarantee a response within 24 hours.

Which termites should Islamorada homeowners worry about?

According to UF/IFAS Monroe County Extension, the two termites that do the most damage in the Keys are the West Indian drywood termite and the Asian subterranean termite, while Formosan and eastern subterranean termites are very rare here. Drywood termites live inside wood and furniture; Asian subterranean termites build mud tubes and can even infest trees. The treatments are different, so the first step is always identifying the species.

I keep a boat at my dock. Can it carry termites?

Yes. University of Florida researchers have found that recreational boats are an important route for invasive termites, and an infested boat can release winged termites that start colonies on shore. In the Sportfishing Capital of the World, that is worth keeping in mind for both the house and the boat.

Can you service our fishing lodge or rental between guests?

Yes. We work with resorts, lodges, marinas, restaurants and rental managers in Islamorada, scheduling visits around check-ins and charters and leaving written reports for owners and inspectors.

Who handles mosquito spraying in Islamorada?

The Florida Keys Mosquito Control District runs area-wide mosquito control throughout the Keys and accepts service requests from residents. Treatment of your own yard and emptying the small containers where the Aedes aegypti mosquito breeds, like buckets, boat covers and plant saucers, are what make the biggest difference at home.

Is the inspection free, and do you speak Spanish?

Yes. Your first inspection costs nothing, you save $25 on the first service, and our team speaks Spanish. Call 305-594-4767 or send the Free Inspection form on this page.
