Why Boca Raton Has Its Own Pest Challenges
Boca Raton sits at the southern end of Palm Beach County, about 45 miles north of Miami, with the Hillsboro Canal forming its southern city limit. It had about 97,400 residents in the 2020 census. Its identity goes back to the 1920s, when architect Addison Mizner became town planner and shaped the city’s Mediterranean Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival look. His Cloister Inn opened in 1926 and grew into today’s Boca Raton resort. When the land boom collapsed, Mizner’s company went bankrupt in 1927, and only part of his plan was ever built.
Part of what was built still stands. In 1925 Mizner announced homes in what is now Old Floresta, and a New York contractor won the job for 29 Mizner-designed houses. In 1990 the neighborhood became Boca Raton’s first historic district, still known for its Spanish-style houses, narrow tree-lined streets and lush landscaping. Those same features, old wood, heavy shade and dense plantings, are what termites, roof rats and ants look for.
The rest of the city grew in later waves. Florida Atlantic University held its first classes in Boca Raton in 1964. IBM opened its Boca Raton complex in 1970 and introduced the IBM PC from there in 1981, and that site is now the Boca Raton Innovation Campus. Gated golf and country club communities spread west, and office parks, Town Center at Boca Raton (opened in 1980) and Mizner Park (1991) filled in the map.
Water ties it together. The Intracoastal Waterway, Lake Boca Raton, the El Rio Canal and the Hillsboro Canal run through or along the city, golf courses are irrigated year-round, and Boca receives about 57 inches of rain a year in a frost-free tropical climate. Moist soil and mild winters mean pests never get a real off-season.
Common Pests in Boca Raton and Why They Show Up
Subterranean Termites
The Formosan and Asian subterranean termites live in the soil and need moisture, and Boca's irrigated fairways, lakes and canals supply plenty of it. A 2026 University of Florida study confirmed that a 2016 forecast is still on course: by about 2040, roughly half of the structures in urban South Florida could face risk from one or both species.
Signs to watch for: pencil-width mud tubes on slab edges, foundations and garage walls.
Drywood Termites
Drywood termites skip the soil and nest directly inside dry wood: rafters, wood ceilings, cabinetry, doors and antique furniture. Mizner-era homes and other older houses with original woodwork are prime targets, and colonies can hide for years behind stucco and plaster.
Signs to watch for: tiny piles of hard, six-sided pellets below wood trim or on window ledges.
Roof Rats
Mature royal palms, ficus hedges, fruit trees and thick tropical plantings give roof rats food and cover, and they climb from branches onto tile roofs and into attics. Around Mizner Park, Town Center and the city's restaurants, rats also follow dumpsters and deliveries. Our rodent control combines exclusion, trapping and monitoring.
Signs to watch for: scurrying in the ceiling after dark and gnawed fruit in the yard.
Mosquitoes
Palm Beach County Mosquito Control points out that bromeliads hold water in their leaf pockets and are a common breeding site for container mosquitoes like Aedes aegypti, which bite during the day. In landscaped Boca yards, bromeliads, saucers and pool covers matter more than the nearest lake. Our mosquito control targets those spots.
Whiteflies
Many Boca Raton properties rely on ficus hedges for privacy, and whiteflies can strip them, leaving sticky residue and sooty mold on cars, pavers and pool decks. Catching an infestation early saves the hedge. See our whitefly control service.
Ants
White-footed ants and ghost ants trail across kitchen counters and bathroom vanities looking for sweets and water, and they nest in landscaping, wall voids and potted plants. Over-the-counter sprays tend to scatter these colonies into more nests. Our ant guide explains why baiting works better.
Boca Raton customers also ask us about American cockroaches coming up from drains, lawn pests in St. Augustine grass (handled by our lawn spray service), spiders in screened lanais, bed bugs after travel, and wildlife such as iguanas and raccoons.
Residential Pest Control in Boca Raton
A historic home in Old Floresta and a new build behind a guard gate need very different plans. Older houses usually have more wood, more openings around tile roofs and more years of hidden termite exposure. Golf and country club homes tend to have large irrigated lawns, lakes behind the backyard, pools and screened enclosures, which favor subterranean termites, ants and mosquitoes. Condos and townhomes along the Intracoastal need treatment that is coordinated with the building, so pests from the unit next door do not undo the work.
Our residential pest control begins with a free inspection of your home inside and out. We look at the roofline, the attic, the foundation, the irrigation and the landscaping, identify which pests are present and why, and then put together a plan that fits the property. Ongoing service keeps protection in place through every season, and our 110% Satisfaction Guarantee means that if the bugs come back, so will Toro, at no additional cost to you.
Buying in Boca? A termite inspection before closing is inexpensive compared with repairing a beam or a ceiling that termites have been eating for years.

All of them, from Downtown Boca Raton and the barrier island to Old Floresta, Pearl City, Camino Gardens and the golf and country club communities farther west, including ZIP codes 33431, 33432, 33433, 33434, 33486, 33487 and 33496. Every request gets a response within 24 hours, guaranteed.
My house in Old Floresta is from the 1920s. Is it more likely to have termites?
Older homes are not doomed, but they have had many more swarm seasons of exposure, and original wood framing, rafters and trim give drywood termites a lot to work with. Renovations can also hide old damage. A free inspection tells you whether there is activity and which species it is, because drywood and subterranean termites are treated very differently.
We live in a gated golf community. Do you coordinate with the HOA or the guard gate?
Yes. We can work around gate access, HOA rules and landscaping crews. Tell us how your community handles vendor access when you book, and we will schedule the visit so the technician can get in without a hassle.
Why do I have so many mosquitoes when there is no pond near my house?
In Boca Raton the culprit is often in the landscaping. Palm Beach County Mosquito Control notes that container mosquitoes such as Aedes lay eggs in any small pocket of water, and bromeliads, which are common in Boca yards, hold water in their leaves. Flushing bromeliads every few days, emptying saucers and treating the yard all help.
Do you service offices, medical buildings and campuses in Boca Raton?
Yes. We work with property managers of office buildings and corporate parks, medical practices, schools and universities, retailers and restaurants, with scheduled visits outside working hours and written reports after every service.
Is the inspection free, and can I speak with someone in Spanish?
Yes. The first inspection costs nothing, new customers save $25 on their first service, and we are happy to help you in Spanish. Call 305-594-4767 or fill out the Free Inspection form on this page.
