Wellington calls itself the Winter Equestrian Capital of the World, and every winter its show grounds, polo fields and private barns fill with horses, riders and grooms. Between the barns, the canals and the golf and lake communities built on drained Everglades-edge land, pests here have plenty to work with. Toro Pest Management has protected South Florida since 1969, and we tailor every Wellington plan to the property, whether it is a family home or a working farm.

Why Wellington Has Its Own Pest Challenges
In the 1950s, Massachusetts accountant Charles Oliver Wellington bought about 18,000 acres of swampland in western Palm Beach County and called it the Flying Cow Ranch. Between 1952 and 1953 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built a levee to protect the land from Everglades floodwaters. Planned development came in the 1970s through the Acme Drainage District, starting with the 150-acre Lake Wellington, a golf course, a country club and the first neighborhoods. Wellington incorporated as a village on December 31, 1995, and by the 2020 census it had about 61,600 residents, making it the most populous village in Florida.
The equestrian world arrived in the late 1970s with the International Polo Club Palm Beach and the Aero Club, a neighborhood built around a private airpark. Today the Winter Equestrian Festival, founded in 1977 and held at Wellington International, runs from January into spring, and the village hosts more than 40 weeks of horse shows a year in show jumping, hunters, dressage and polo. Farms and private barns cluster in areas like Palm Beach Point, Grand Prix Village and Saddle Trail Park.
All of that creates pest conditions you will not find in a beach town. Horses mean manure, bedding, hay and feed, which feed flies and rodents. Barns, run-in sheds, wood fences and jumps add structural wood for termites and sheltered eaves for wasps. Under it all is low, drained land threaded with canals, and a wet season that runs from May through October. Horse waste is a long-running local issue: a 2017 local news report cited about 26,000 loads hauled out of the area each year, with volumes swelling during the four to five busiest months.
Common Pests in Wellington and Why They Show Up
Rats and Mice
Grain, sweet feed, hay and shavings make barns and feed rooms a magnet for rodents, and once they settle in they chew feed bags, tack and wiring. Roof rats also move from barn to house along fences and tree limbs, and house mice nest in stored bedding. Our rodent control combines exclusion, trapping and monitoring.
Signs to watch for: droppings in feed rooms, gnawed bags and grease marks along walls.
Subterranean Termites
The Formosan and Asian subterranean termites thrive in moist soil, and in Wellington that soil sits next to fence posts, barn framing and slab homes alike. Asian subterranean termites swarm at dusk in March, with Formosan swarms starting in late April. UF researchers reported in 2026 that a 2016 forecast still holds: about half of urban South Florida structures could be at risk by around 2040.
Signs to watch for: mud tubes on posts, stall walls and foundations.
Mosquitoes
Canals, lakes and wet pastures breed mosquitoes in summer, and water buckets, troughs and tarps add more. The Asian tiger mosquito and Aedes aegypti both lay eggs in small containers and bite during the day, when riders and grooms are outside. Our mosquito control targets breeding and resting spots.
Fire Ants
Fire ants love open, sunny ground: paddock edges, arenas, lawns and the sides of bridle paths. Their stings are painful for people and can bother animals that lie down or graze near a mound. Mounds often reappear after heavy rain. Learn more in our ant guide.
Wasps
Paper wasps build nests under barn eaves, inside run-in sheds, behind shutters and on horse trailers, and they defend them aggressively. A nest next to a stall door or a wash rack is a hazard for horses and handlers. See our wasp guide.
Drywood Termites
Drywood termites do not need soil contact. They infest dry lumber in attics, barn lofts, trim and furniture, and colonies can go unnoticed for years. They swarm from March to June.
Signs to watch for: small, six-sided pellets collecting below wood.
Wellington clients also ask us about flies around barns and manure areas, ghost ants and white-footed ants in kitchens, spiders in tack rooms and garages, fleas carried in by dogs and barn cats, whiteflies on hedges, lawn pests that we treat with our lawn spray service, and wildlife such as raccoons and opossums raiding feed.
Residential Pest Control in Wellington
Wellington homes range from golf and lake communities such as Binks Forest to estate properties with a house, a barn and pastures on the same lot. A suburban home usually needs protection at the foundation, attic and yard. An equestrian property needs a plan that also covers feed storage, stalls, outbuildings and manure areas, and that respects the animals living there.
Our residential pest control starts with a free inspection of the house and, when you have one, the barn. We identify the pests, how they get in and what draws them, and then recommend a plan built for your property. Ongoing service keeps protection in place through the show season and the wet season, and our 110% Satisfaction Guarantee means that if the bugs come back, so will Toro, at no additional cost to you.

Commercial Pest Control for Wellington Businesses
Much of Wellington’s business calendar follows the equestrian season. In winter, riders, owners, grooms and spectators from across the country and abroad fill the village’s restaurants, rentals and shops, and farms and show venues have their busiest months. The village is also home to The Mall at Wellington Green, Wellington Regional Medical Center, shopping plazas, schools and many homeowners associations.
We provide commercial pest control for:
- Equestrian farms, boarding barns and training facilities, with rodent, ant, wasp and termite service.
- Restaurants and food service, which get busiest during the show season.
- Seasonal rentals and lodging.
- Retail stores and shopping centers.
- Health care facilities, schools and property managers of HOAs and rental communities.
Commercial accounts receive detailed service reports for inspections and audits, and visits can be scheduled around feeding times, lessons and business hours. Our technicians train at the TORO Institute, the training facility at our Miami headquarters, where on-staff entomologists teach food safety, sanitation, structural practices and pest management techniques.

Schedule Your Free InspectionWellington Pest Control FAQ
Do you service homes and equestrian properties throughout Wellington?
Yes. We service single-family homes, HOAs, businesses and equestrian properties across Wellington, from Binks Forest and the Aero Club to Palm Beach Point, Grand Prix Village, Saddle Trail Park and Paddock Park, in ZIP codes 33414, 33449 and 33467. Response within 24 hours is guaranteed.
Can you help with rats and mice in a barn or feed room?
Yes. Feed, hay and bedding attract rats and mice, and they chew through bags, wiring and insulation. We inspect barns, tack rooms and feed rooms, seal entry points where possible and set up rodent monitoring and control with the animals on the property in mind.
Why are there so many flies around barns, and what helps?
University of Florida extension specialists explain that house flies lay their eggs in manure and organic waste, and stable flies breed in soggy hay, feed and manure mixed with hay. Removing manure often, keeping it away from the barn, composting it and cleaning up wet hay and feed are the most important steps. We can inspect the property and recommend a plan for the pests on site.
Are termites a risk for barns and wood fencing as well as homes?
Yes. Subterranean termites, including the invasive Formosan and Asian subterranean species, attack any wood that touches or sits near damp soil, and drywood termites can infest dry structural lumber. A barn inspection looks at posts, framing, stall boards and storage areas, not just the house.
Why do mosquitoes seem worse in Wellington than on the coast?
Wellington was built on drained wetland at the edge of the Everglades, and it is laced with canals and lakes, including the 150-acre Lake Wellington. Water buckets, troughs, tarps and plant saucers add more breeding spots. Changing standing water often and treating shady resting areas help the most.
Is the inspection free, and do you speak Spanish?
Yes. Your first inspection is free, new customers receive $25 off their first service, and our team speaks Spanish. Call 305-594-4767 or use the Free Inspection form on this page.
