North Bay Village is three small islands in the middle of Biscayne Bay, joined to Miami and Miami Beach by the John F. Kennedy (79th Street) Causeway. Surrounded by water and lined with condo towers, older single-family homes and restaurants, the village has a pest picture all its own. Toro Pest Management has protected Miami-Dade properties since 1969, and we build each North Bay Village plan around island living.

Why North Bay Village Has Its Own Pest Challenges
Before 1940, almost all of what is now North Bay Village was open water in Biscayne Bay. The only dry land was Broadcast Key, where radio station WIOD began broadcasting in 1926. North Bay Island was created in 1940 by dredging and bulkheading, the village was incorporated in 1945, and Harbor Island and Treasure Island were dredged and filled later in the 1940s. The 2020 census counted 8,159 residents, and the whole village, land and water together, covers less than one square mile.
That origin explains a lot. Built on dredged fill and edged by about 4.75 miles of waterfront, the village has water on every side. Humidity stays high, seawalls and docks create shaded, damp shelter, and the John F. Kennedy Causeway (also known as the 79th Street Causeway) carries a constant flow of traffic, deliveries and people between Miami and Miami Beach.
The three islands are also built differently. North Bay Island is mostly single-family homes, some dating to the early 1940s. Harbor Island is mostly multi-family buildings. Treasure Island mixes single-family homes on its west end with apartments and condos on its east end, and since 2000 most new construction across the village has been high-rise condominiums. A house with an old attic and a 20-story tower with trash chutes need very different pest plans, and we treat them that way.
Common Pests in North Bay Village and Why They Show Up
German Cockroaches
In apartment and condo buildings, German cockroaches spread from one unit to the next through shared walls, plumbing and garbage rooms. They breed fast, so a few roaches in a kitchen can become hundreds in weeks. Our cockroach guide covers how they differ from the larger palmetto bug.
Signs to watch for: small roaches when you turn on the kitchen light and dark specks in cabinet corners.
Roof Rats
Docks, boat lifts, palms and seawall landscaping give roof rats food and cover, and they climb easily to rooftops and balconies. In older homes on North Bay Island, they often settle in attics. Our rodent control focuses on sealing entry points, trapping and monitoring.
Signs to watch for: scratching overhead at night and droppings in the attic or garage.
Drywood Termites
Drywood termites fly in from March to June and set up colonies inside dry wood: rafters, window frames, doors and furniture. Homes from the village's first decades and condo units with wood cabinets or trim are both at risk, because these termites do not need soil to survive.
Signs to watch for: small heaps of pellets that look like coarse sand.
Mosquitoes
The Aedes aegypti mosquito breeds in small amounts of standing water, and island properties have plenty: boat covers, buckets, potted plants on balconies and pool covers. It bites during the day, so it finds people on docks and terraces. Our mosquito control treats where they breed and rest.
Ghost and White-Footed Ants
These tiny ants nest in wall voids, planters and landscaping and travel inside along pipes and wires, often from one floor of a building to the next. Store-bought sprays tend to scatter the colony. See our ant guide for more.
Silverfish
Steady humidity on the islands suits silverfish, which feed on paper, glue, fabrics and starches. They hide in closets, storage rooms, bathrooms and boxes in condo storage cages, and they usually point to a moisture problem worth fixing.
Residents also call us about American cockroaches coming up through drains, spiders on balconies and around exterior lights, birds roosting on ledges and railings, and wildlife such as iguanas along seawalls.
Residential Pest Control in North Bay Village
Condo living on Harbor Island or the east end of Treasure Island means sharing walls, pipes and trash rooms with dozens of neighbors. For these homes, we treat the unit, look for the route pests are using to get in, and, when needed, work with the association so common areas and nearby units are handled at the same time. That coordination is often the difference between a short-term fix and a lasting one.
Single-family homes on North Bay Island and the west end of Treasure Island need something closer to a classic home plan: protection around the foundation and seawall, attention to the attic and roofline, and yard treatments for ants and mosquitoes. Because many of these homes are decades old, we check the woodwork for termites on every first visit.
Our residential pest control starts with a free inspection of the interior and exterior. You get a clear explanation of what we found and a plan that matches your home. Regular service keeps protection in place through the year, and with our 110% Satisfaction Guarantee, if the bugs come back, so will Toro, at no additional cost to you. For homes with older wood, ask about our termite control options.
Commercial Pest Control for North Bay Village Businesses
North Bay Village has a long history as a place to eat and be entertained. For decades its restaurants and nightclubs drew celebrities such as Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland, and Dean Martin opened a nightclub in the village in the late 1960s. The village has also been home to broadcasters such as WIOD and WSVN-TV. Today it is still known for its restaurants, and every kitchen, storefront and residential tower has to keep pests out.
We provide commercial pest control for:
- Restaurants, bars and food service, where cockroaches, flies and rodents put health inspections at risk.
- Property management companies and condo associations that manage towers, garages and trash rooms.
- Retail stores and storefronts that serve island residents.
- Schools and educational facilities, with service planned around class schedules.
- Offices and studios, through our general commercial services.
Commercial clients receive written reports after each visit, useful for inspectors and auditors. Our technicians are trained at the TORO Institute at our Miami headquarters, where on-staff entomologists teach food safety, sanitation, structural practices and modern pest management.

Schedule Your Free InspectionNorth Bay Village Pest Control FAQ
Do you cover all three islands in North Bay Village?
Yes. We service Harbor Island, North Bay Island and Treasure Island, all within ZIP code 33141, from high-rise condos to single-family homes and businesses along the causeway. We guarantee a response within 24 hours.
Why do roaches keep showing up in my condo even though my unit is clean?
In multi-family buildings, German cockroaches and ghost ants travel through shared walls, plumbing chases, electrical lines and trash rooms. A clean unit can still be reinfested from a neighbor. Lasting results usually come from treating your unit and working with building management on common areas and any affected units nearby.
Does living on the water mean more rats?
Waterfront property gives roof rats shelter in docks, seawall landscaping and palm trees, and boats and stored gear add hiding places. Rats then climb branches, utility lines and walls to reach roofs and balconies. Sealing gaps, trimming branches back from the roofline and trapping are the core of our rodent work.
My house on North Bay Island is older. Should I worry about termites?
It is worth checking. The first homes on North Bay Island were occupied in 1941, so many houses have original or decades-old wood. Drywood termites infest that wood from the inside, and subterranean termites can come up from damp soil. An inspection shows whether either is active.
How can I cut down on mosquitoes on my boat or dock?
Miami-Dade Mosquito Control recommends covering boats and vehicles with tarps that do not collect water, and emptying anything that holds rain, such as buckets, coolers, flower pots and pool covers. We can also treat the shaded plants and structures around your home where adult mosquitoes rest.
Is the first inspection free, and do you have Spanish-speaking technicians?
Yes. Your first inspection is free, new customers save $25 on the first service, and our team speaks Spanish. Call 305-594-4767 or use the Free Inspection form on this page.
