Tamarac was born as an active adult community, and its 2020 median age of 47.5 still reflects that, with large 55+ communities such as Kings Point, condominium complexes, golf-course neighborhoods and lakes on nearly every side. Toro Pest Management has served South Florida since 1969, and in Tamarac we pay special attention to clear communication, careful scheduling and the pests that come with turf, water and mature homes.

Why Tamarac Has Its Own Pest Challenges
In the early 1960s, developer Ken Behring came to Broward County from the Midwest and built an “active adult community” of two-bedroom, maintenance-free homes. He named it after the Tamarac Country Club in Oakland Park. His first development went up in 1963 east of State Road 7, and the city was incorporated on August 15 of that year. Tamarac Lakes North and South, the Mainlands of Tamarac Lakes and the Woodlands followed, and in 1971 Behring Properties opened Colony West as a public golf course. From the start, city leaders wanted Tamarac to stay a “bedroom community.”
That plan shaped the city you see today. Tamarac’s 2020 census population was 71,897, with a median age of 47.5 and more than a quarter of residents 65 or older. Much of its housing is in age-restricted and adult communities, including Kings Point, a gated community with close to 4,900 attached homes and condos built between 1983 and 2001, along with Concord Village, Lime Bay, Bermuda Club and the Mainlands, much of it dating from the late 1960s through the 1980s.
Golf and water define the landscape. The city-owned Colony West Golf Club has 36 holes on its Championship and Glades courses, and the city bought it in 2011. The former Woodlands Country Club site has been sold for redevelopment: in 2024, 13th Floor Homes acquired about 270 acres there for a gated community of 335 single-family homes. And as names like Tamarac Lakes, Lime Bay and Lakes of Carriage Hills suggest, water is part of many neighborhoods.
For pests, that adds up to three things: homes old enough to have hosted decades of termite swarms, moist turf and lakeshores that favor ants, mosquitoes and subterranean termites, and a population that often needs patient, clearly explained service, sometimes coordinated with a family member or an association.
Common Pests in Tamarac and Why They Show Up
Subterranean Termites
Irrigated fairways, lakes and canals keep Tamarac's soil damp, which suits the invasive Formosan and Asian subterranean termites. UF researchers reported in 2026 that a 2016 projection remains on target: roughly half of urban South Florida structures could be exposed to these species by about 2040.
Signs to watch for: mud tubes on slab edges, garage walls and patio supports.
Drywood Termites
Homes from the 1960s and 1970s have had more than fifty swarm seasons of exposure, and drywood termites settle into roof framing, door frames, cabinets and treasured furniture. They live entirely in the wood, with no soil contact needed, so they can be anywhere in the house.
Signs to watch for: tiny piles of pellets under wood and wings on windowsills in spring.
Roof Rats
Mature palms, fruit trees and dense hedges around older communities give roof rats a highway to the roofline and into attics. Bird feeders and fallen fruit add to the menu. Our rodent control combines sealing entry points with trapping and monitoring.
Signs to watch for: noises in the ceiling at night and droppings in the garage or attic.
Ants
Fire ants love sunny turf, so mounds appear along fairways, lawns and walkways, and their stings can be a real concern for older adults. Ghost ants and white-footed ants trail indoors to kitchens and bathrooms. Our ant guide explains why baits usually outperform sprays.
Mosquitoes
Golf-course lakes and summer rains produce mosquitoes, and the Aedes aegypti mosquito breeds in small containers on patios and screened porches, such as plant saucers, bromeliads and watering cans. It bites in daylight. Our mosquito control treats breeding and resting areas.
Lawn and Shrub Pests
Chinch bugs leave yellowing, dead patches in St. Augustine grass, especially in sunny, drought-stressed spots, and whiteflies weaken ficus hedges. In communities where appearance matters, our lawn spray and whitefly control services help keep landscaping healthy.
Tamarac residents also call us about German and American cockroaches, silverfish in closets and stored papers, spiders on lanais, bed bugs brought back from travel, and wildlife such as iguanas and raccoons around the lakes.
Residential Pest Control in Tamarac
A villa in the Mainlands, a condo in Kings Point and a new home on former golf land need different approaches. Single-family homes and villas need a foundation barrier, termite monitoring and an attic sealed against rats. Condominiums need service that respects shared walls and works with the association. Homes on golf courses and lakes need extra attention to ants, mosquitoes and damp soil.
Our residential pest control begins with a free inspection. Our technician checks inside and outside, explains what is going on in plain language and answers your questions before anything is applied. If a son, daughter or caregiver helps manage your home, we are happy to include them in the conversation. With ongoing service, our 110% Satisfaction Guarantee applies: if the bugs come back, so will Toro, at no additional cost to you.
Because so much of Tamarac’s housing is several decades old, a yearly termite inspection is a sound, low-cost precaution for any homeowner. If you spend summers up north, schedule a visit before you leave and another before you return, so a closed-up home does not become a home for pests.
Commercial Pest Control for Tamarac Businesses
Tamarac’s economy is built around its residents: health care, community associations, recreation and local services. HCA Florida Woodmont Hospital on University Drive and the many medical offices around it serve a large population of older adults. Colony West’s clubhouse includes a restaurant and a banquet hall, and shopping centers along the city’s main roads host restaurants and stores.
We provide commercial pest control for:
- Health care facilities, medical offices and assisted living, where pest control is part of patient care and compliance.
- Property management companies and condominium and homeowner associations.
- Restaurants, clubhouses and food service, where cockroaches, flies and rodents are a health code issue.
- Retail stores and shopping centers.
- Government facilities and schools.
Commercial programs include written reports for inspections and boards, and visits can be scheduled around your operations. Our technicians train at the TORO Institute, the training facility at our Miami headquarters, where on-staff entomologists teach food safety, sanitation, structural practices and pest management techniques.

Do you service the 55+ communities in Tamarac?
Yes. We work in Kings Point, the Mainlands, Concord Village, Lime Bay, Bermuda Club, Lakes of Carriage Hills and the rest of Tamarac, in ZIP codes 33309, 33319, 33321 and 33351. We can schedule visits at times that suit you, explain every step before we start, and respond within 24 hours, guaranteed.
Can you work with my condominium association?
Yes. Many Tamarac buildings are managed by associations. We can treat an individual unit, set up a scheduled program for common areas, trash rooms and grounds, and give the board written reports after each visit so everyone knows what was done.
I live on a golf course. Why do I have so many ants and termites?
Golf courses and lakes keep the surrounding soil moist and the turf full of insects. Fire ants build mounds in sunny grass, and subterranean termites like damp ground close to slabs. A perimeter treatment around the home, careful mulch and irrigation management and regular inspections keep those pests outside.
Will the new construction on old golf course land affect pests near me?
Large construction projects disturb soil and vegetation, and rodents, ants and other pests that lived there look for new shelter, sometimes in the homes next door. If you live near a building site, sealing gaps around doors, garages and rooflines and keeping an eye out for droppings and mud tubes is a smart precaution.
Does tenting kill all termites?
No. Fumigation is effective against drywood termites, which live inside wood. Subterranean termites keep their colony in the soil, so the tent never reaches them, and they are treated with soil applications or bait systems. We identify the species first.
Is the inspection free, and can I speak with someone in Spanish?
Yes. The first inspection is free, new customers save $25 on their first service, and our team speaks Spanish. Call 305-594-4767 or use the Free Inspection form on this page.
