Pest Risks for Government Facilities in South Florida

Public buildings combine offices, lobbies open to visitors, records rooms, break rooms, loading docks and grounds, and each one draws different pests. Boxed files give cockroaches shelter, and UF/IFAS notes that American cockroaches eat paper as well as food. Roof rats travel along utility wires and branches to reach rooflines, and Norway rats are most common along sea coasts and canals, which puts seaports and waterfront facilities at risk.

The climate works on the grounds too. South Florida’s wet season, from about mid-May to mid-October, leaves standing water where mosquitoes breed, and fire ants build mounds in parks and playing fields. Formosan and Asian subterranean termites swarm in spring and are attracted to lights, and UF/IFAS notes that trees infested by Asian subterranean termites are at higher risk of breaking during hurricanes, a concern for parks and shaded campuses. After a storm, flooding displaces rodents and drives them toward buildings.

Where We Focus in a Public Facility

Lobbies and Public Counters

Visitors bring in food and open doors all day. We check entrances, door sweeps and waiting areas for roaches, ants and rodent signs.

Records and Storage Rooms

Boxes and paper give pests quiet shelter. We look for droppings, gnawed boxes and gaps along walls and pipes.

Break Rooms and Loading Docks

Food, trash and deliveries draw roaches and rodents. We inspect appliances, sinks, dumpsters and dock doors.

Grounds, Parks and Rooflines

We check for fire ant mounds, standing water, termite activity in trees and structures, and pigeons on ledges and roofs.

What Procurement Expects

Government specifications spell out pest control in detail. The Integrated Pest Management section of GSA’s National Custodial Specification (2012 revision), for example, calls for:

  • a pest control plan that includes the labels and Safety Data Sheets for every pesticide to be used
  • an inspection schedule for each building or site
  • a pest control logbook for each building or site, kept on government property
  • notice to occupants at least 72 hours before routine pesticide applications

At the state level, Florida law requires every business location of a pest control company to be licensed by FDACS (s. 482.071, F.S.). Send us your scope of work, and we will respond to it.

Government Facility Pest Control: Frequently Asked Questions

How do you price a government contract?

Pricing depends on the size of the facility, the pests involved, how often you need service and the scope in your solicitation. We can respond to your RFP, RFQ or RFI, or start with a free inspection so you have a plan and a quote before any work begins.

Do you use Integrated Pest Management?

Yes. Federal law (7 U.S.C. 136r-1) requires federal agencies to use IPM techniques in their pest management. Our IPM program starts with an inspection, then uses monitoring, targeted treatments and sanitation and structural recommendations that reduce what pests need to live in your building.

What types of facilities do you serve?

Government office buildings and complexes, parks, seaports, airports and transit facilities, from a single building to a multi-site campus, across Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and the Keys. We build a program for each location, so every site gets the service it needs.

Can you work around public hours and secure areas?

Yes. We schedule service around your operating hours. Tell us about restricted areas, access and escort procedures, employees with sensitivities and any notification rules your agency uses, and we plan each visit around them. Products are applied according to the label.

Which pests do you cover?

Roaches, ants, rodents, flies and spiders indoors, termites in structures, mosquitoes on the grounds and pigeons on ledges and roofs. Rats and mice also gnaw on wires and insulation, so we seal the gaps they use. If new activity appears between regular visits, we come back free of charge.
