El Portal is a village of fewer than 2,000 people and well under half a square mile, tucked between Miami Shores and the City of Miami along the Little River. Its oak-shaded streets, decades-old homes and status as a bird sanctuary give it a character all its own, and a set of pest challenges to match. Toro Pest Management has protected Miami-Dade homes since 1969, and we plan each El Portal service around the house, the trees and the water nearby.

Why El Portal Has Its Own Pest Challenges
People have lived along the Little River for a very long time. In El Portal’s Sherwood Forest neighborhood stands the Little River Mound, a man-made burial mound about four feet high that dates to around 600 AD and is linked to a much older precolonial village. It was the first archaeological site publicly recognized and preserved in Miami-Dade County. The area later became part of the City of Miami in 1925, was dropped by Miami in 1932 to cut costs during the Depression, and was incorporated as the Village of El Portal on December 6, 1937, with just 25 homes at the start. Its name, Spanish for “the gate,” recalls gates that once stood on NE 2nd Avenue and were removed in the 1940s.
El Portal is small: roughly 0.4 square miles, 1,986 residents in the 2020 census and about 850 homes. It is bordered by 91st Street to the north, the Little River Canal to the south and NE 5th Avenue and NW 5th Avenue to the east and west, with Miami Shores to the north and the City of Miami to the south and east. The village was formed from three areas, Sherwood Forest, El Jardin and El Portal, and Sherwood Forest is known for its tall oak trees.
Since the 1950s the State of Florida has designated El Portal a bird sanctuary, and its broad tree canopy draws many species of birds, including peacocks. For pests, that setting means three things: shade and humidity that hold moisture in the soil, mature trees that give rodents and ants a path to the roof, and older homes, some going back to the village’s early decades, with wood that termites have had years to find.
Common Pests in El Portal and Why They Show Up
Subterranean Termites
The Formosan and Asian subterranean termites are invasive species that live in moist soil and travel into buildings through mud tubes. Shaded lots near the Little River Canal give them steady moisture. University of Florida research continues to support a 2016 forecast that about half of urban South Florida's structures could be at risk from them by around 2040.
Signs to watch for: mud tubes on foundations and swarms near lights on spring evenings.
Drywood Termites
Drywood termites need no soil at all. Winged swarmers enter through attic vents, gaps and open windows from March to June and start colonies in roof framing, window frames, doors and furniture. In older El Portal homes, there may be more than one colony in the same house.
Signs to watch for: small piles of hard, sand-like pellets.
Roof Rats
Oaks, palms and fruit trees with branches over the roof are a direct route for roof rats into attics, where they nest and gnaw on wiring. Our rodent control combines trimming advice, sealing entry points, trapping and monitoring.
Signs to watch for: scratching sounds at night and droppings in the attic or garage.
Florida Carpenter Ants
These large ants, with rusty-orange to brown heads and black abdomens, nest in dead branches, rotting stumps and logs, and sometimes in wall voids, attics and window frames. They forage mostly around sunset and at night, using branches that touch the house and utility wires as bridges inside. Under El Portal's heavy canopy they have plenty of nesting sites. Learn more in our ant guide.
Mosquitoes
Canal water, shaded yards, tree holes and bromeliads all support mosquitoes. The Aedes aegypti breeds in small containers and bites by day, while the southern house mosquito bites at night. Our mosquito control targets where they breed and rest.
Wildlife
Iguanas, raccoons and opossums move along the canal and through wooded yards. Iguana burrows can undermine sidewalks, seawalls and foundations, and raccoons tear into loose soffits to reach attics. Our wildlife service removes them and helps close the openings.
El Portal residents also call us about whiteflies on ficus hedges, wasps under eaves, American cockroaches after heavy rain, spiders around porches and lawn pests in St. Augustine grass (handled with our lawn spray service).
Residential Pest Control in El Portal
Many El Portal homes sit under mature trees, and many have stood for decades. That calls for a whole-property approach. On a first visit, we look at the roofline where branches touch, the attic and its vents, the condition of exterior wood, the soil along the foundation and anything in the yard that holds water. Homes near the canal get extra attention for subterranean termites and wildlife.
The big oaks are part of what makes El Portal special, so we work with them rather than against them. Keeping limbs trimmed back from the roof, removing dead branches where carpenter ants nest, and keeping mulch and leaf litter away from the foundation cut pest pressure without changing the character of the yard.
Our residential pest control begins with a free inspection. We explain what we found in plain terms and recommend a plan that fits the house, the yard and the village’s bird-sanctuary setting. Ongoing visits keep protection in place, and our 110% Satisfaction Guarantee means that if the bugs come back, so will Toro, at no additional cost to you.
Buying an older house in El Portal? Schedule a termite inspection before closing. Hidden damage in roof framing or behind trim is far cheaper to deal with before you move in.
Commercial Pest Control for El Portal Properties
El Portal is mainly residential, but it is home to Horace Mann Middle School and village facilities, and its edges connect to the commercial corridors of Miami and Miami Shores. Schools, rental homes and public spaces all need dependable, documented pest control.
We provide commercial pest control for:
- Schools and educational facilities, scheduled around the school day.
- Government and public facilities.
- Property management companies and owners of rental homes.
- Restaurants and retail stores in the surrounding area.
Every commercial visit comes with a written report. Our technicians are trained at the TORO Institute at our Miami headquarters, where on-staff entomologists teach food safety, sanitation, structural practices and modern pest management.

Schedule Your Free InspectionEl Portal Pest Control FAQ
Do you serve every street in El Portal?
Yes. We cover the entire village, including Sherwood Forest, El Jardin and the original El Portal section, from 91st Street down to the Little River Canal, in ZIP codes 33138 and 33150. We guarantee a response within 24 hours.
Does living near the Little River Canal mean more termites?
It can. Subterranean termites need moist soil, and properties near the canal, with heavy shade and irrigated yards, tend to stay damp. The invasive Formosan and Asian subterranean termites build very large colonies in those conditions. A yearly inspection catches activity early, before mud tubes reach the framing.
I see large black ants at night near my oak tree. What are they?
They are often Florida carpenter ants, which nest in dead branches, stumps and rotting wood and sometimes in wall voids and attics. They forage mostly around sunset and at night. They do not eat wood the way termites do and only dig into soft or rotten material, but a colony inside a wall is worth treating. We locate the nest and treat it directly.
El Portal is a bird sanctuary. How does that affect pest control?
We focus on the specific pest and the place it lives rather than treating the whole yard. That means sealing entry points for rodents, removing standing water for mosquitoes, using baits for ants where they fit, and applying products according to their label directions.
Can you get rid of iguanas or raccoons on my property?
Yes. Our wildlife service handles iguanas, raccoons, opossums and other animals that move into attics, under sheds or into yards, and we help close the openings so they do not return.
Is the inspection free, and do you have Spanish-speaking staff?
Yes. The first inspection is free, new customers get $25 off their first service, and our team speaks Spanish. Call 305-594-4767 or use the Free Inspection form on this page.
