Lantana is a small coastal town with old fishing roots, from the mainland streets around Ocean Avenue to Hypoluxo Island and an oceanfront municipal beach. Homes here range from postwar houses to waterfront condos, and many sit close to the Intracoastal or the sea. Toro Pest Management has protected South Florida since 1969, and we give Lantana households and businesses a plan based on what we find on the property.

Keeping Lantana Homes Pest-Free, From Island Condos to Postwar Houses
Most Lantana pest calls begin at home, and the home in question depends on which side of the bridge you are on. Mainland blocks hold many houses from the building boom that followed World War II, with original wood, older plumbing and mature yards. Hypoluxo Island, the town’s eastern portion, mixes waterfront houses and condominiums along the Intracoastal. Salt air wears out door sweeps and screens, and a damp seawall strip stays attractive to subterranean termites and ants.
For older mainland houses, we start with the attic and the window frames, because drywood colonies and roof rats tend to show up there first. Plumbing penetrations and slab cracks come next. On the island, we look at shared walls, garages and landscaping beds, and we talk with the association when an issue crosses unit lines. Along Lantana Road, the old A.G. Holley hospital site was cleared in 2014 to make way for condos and a shopping center, and newer buildings like these have their own needs, mainly ants, roaches and rodents around trash areas.
Residential pest control from Toro starts with a free inspection inside and outside the home. We name the pests, explain why they are there and suggest a plan for your budget. Homes on the island or near a canal also get a look at seawalls, docks and stored boat gear, where rats and iguanas often settle first. Maintenance visits keep pests from returning, and our 110% Satisfaction Guarantee means that if the bugs come back, so will Toro, at no additional cost to you.
If you are buying a resale home, book a termite inspection first. Termite damage hides well behind paint and drywall, and sellers may not know it is there. Renters and landlords can call us too. Roaches and bed bugs often move in with furniture, and checking a unit between tenants costs far less than treating a building later.
Lantana’s Fishing Past and Its Place on the Lagoon
Lantana’s story starts on the water. Hannibal Pierce settled on Hypoluxo Island in 1873, and the Lyman family arrived on the mainland in the late 1880s. M. B. Lyman opened a store and post office in 1889 and named it Lantana Point, after the wild flowering plant. His Lantana Fish Company landed huge catches, and in the early 1900s oysters were the leading industry. The house Lyman built in 1889 now operates as the Old Key Lime House seafood restaurant, and it is counted among the oldest waterfront restaurants in Florida.
The town incorporated on July 20, 1921, with about 100 residents on a single square mile. The first bridge to the barrier island came in 1925, and in 1931 about 40 acres at the south end of Hypoluxo Island left to join Manalapan. Finnish immigrants arrived in the 1930s, and for much of the 1970s and 1980s the town was the publishing home of the National Enquirer, whose giant Christmas tree stood by the railroad tracks. Growth picked up after World War II, and commercial development grew after Interstate 95 went through town in the mid-1970s. Today the 2020 census counts 11,504 residents and 5,659 housing units on just under 3 square miles, about 0.6 of it water, and the town currently puts its population at 12,218.
Those details matter for pests. Ocean Avenue runs from the Intracoastal west to U.S. 1 as the downtown spine, Greynolds Circle anchors the town center, and the Lantana Nature Preserve, Bicentennial Park, Sportsman’s Park and Lyman Kayak Park put green space beside the water. Seawalls, boat launches and old trees create the moisture and shelter that rats, roaches and termites look for. The town has seven parks, a two-acre boat launch and a fishing pier, so people, bait, food and trash all meet at the water’s edge. Lantana was once designated a Tree City, and the trees that remain near homes deserve a look, since UF/IFAS says invasive termites can nest inside them. The area normally gets more than 60 inches of rain a year, measured at Palm Beach International Airport to the north, and most of it arrives from May through October.
What Lantana Properties Deal With Most
American Cockroaches
Often called palmetto bugs, these big roaches live in sewers, storm drains and tree holes, then come inside at night. Older drains in Lantana give them an easy route. Seal gaps and fix door sweeps, then read our cockroach guide.
Signs to watch for: large roaches near drains and dark droppings in garages.
Drywood Termites
Homes from the postwar boom have had decades of exposure. Drywood termites live in the wood itself, so they need no soil contact, and antique furniture can bring them in. We recommend the treatment that matches how widespread the colonies are.
Signs to watch for: coffee-ground-like pellets on sills and small kick-out holes.
Subterranean Termites
Soil along seawalls and canals stays damp, and the Asian and Formosan subterranean termites take advantage. UF/IFAS says both can hide in large living trees, so a tree near the house is part of the inspection.
Signs to watch for: mud tubes on foundations and swarmers near lights in spring.
Roof Rats
Palm fronds, fruit trees and old shade trees give roof rats a path to the attic, and dumpsters behind restaurants feed them. Our rodent control combines sealing soffits and vents with trapping and sanitation.
Signs to watch for: scratching overhead and droppings along attic beams.
Mosquitoes
Bromeliads, gutters, boat covers and birdbaths hold enough water for Aedes aegypti, a day-biting species, and the common house mosquito breeds in stagnant drains. Our mosquito control removes sources and treats resting spots.
Signs to watch for: bites in the shade during the day and wrigglers in standing water.
Ants
Ghost ants and white-footed ants trail along wires and irrigation lines, while fire ants build mounds in sunny lawns and along road edges. Our ant guide explains why baits usually beat sprays for the tiny indoor species.
Signs to watch for: lines of tiny ants at sinks and soft mounds after rain.
Lantana residents also ask us about whiteflies on palms and hedges, lawn pests in St. Augustine grass, bed bugs after travel, and iguanas along seawalls, which our wildlife team can address.
Lantana Business Pest Control, From Ocean Avenue to the Beach
Lantana’s business life concentrates in a few places. Downtown Ocean Avenue is a walkable strip of cafes, restaurants and shops, and a 2023 master plan proposed a dining incentive area along it. The oceanfront Dune Deck cafe and the neighboring Eau Palm Beach Resort sit beside the town’s eight-acre beach, with its 745 feet of ocean frontage. Lantana Road adds shopping centers and new development. Each of these places has food, trash and visitors, and each one answers to inspectors and to its customers. Waterfront kitchens face a particular challenge, because doors open onto decks and docks where flies, roaches and rats are already active. Good door sweeps, tight dumpster lids and regular cleaning under equipment make our treatments last longer.
We provide commercial pest control for:
- Restaurants, cafes and bars along Ocean Avenue and the waterfront.
- Hotels and resorts, with attention to bed bugs and kitchens.
- Retail stores and shopping centers.
- Condominium associations and property managers.
- Medical offices and schools.
- Town and public buildings.
Business clients get written reports for health inspections, and scheduling works around your open hours. Our technicians train at the TORO Institute at our Miami headquarters, where our on-staff entomologists teach sanitation and food safety.

Schedule Your Free InspectionWhat Lantana Residents Ask Us
Do you serve Hypoluxo Island as well as mainland Lantana?
Yes. We cover the island, downtown Ocean Avenue, the Town Center around Greynolds Circle and the neighborhoods along Lantana Road, all in ZIP code 33462, with a guaranteed response within 24 hours.
Why do I see so many roaches near the Intracoastal?
Older sewer lines, storm drains, seawalls and restaurant dumpsters give large American cockroaches a steady home, and they walk in under doors on warm nights. German cockroaches are a different problem, usually indoors. We identify which one you have, because the fix is not the same.
My older Lantana house has pellets on the windowsill. What are they?
Probably drywood termite droppings, which look like coffee grounds. Lantana's postwar building boom left many homes with decades-old wood, and drywood termites can live inside it for years. Sweep the pellets up and see whether they return, then call us for a free inspection.
What can I do about mosquitoes after a Lantana summer rain?
Tip every container, including bromeliads, plant saucers and boat tarps, once a week. The Aedes aegypti mosquito needs very little water. Our yard treatments reach resting areas, and Palm Beach County Mosquito Control takes separate service requests for area-wide problems.
Can you work around our restaurant's hours on Ocean Avenue?
Yes. We schedule commercial visits before opening or after closing, and we provide written reports you can keep on hand for inspectors.
Is the first inspection really free? Do you speak Spanish?
It really is free, new customers save $25 on their first service, and we speak Spanish. Call 305-594-4767 or fill out the Free Inspection form on this page.
